The physics does not care

Why recreational exposure is under-managed
No employer, so no programme. No monitoring, no annual test, no provided protection.
No regulation in most jurisdictions for what a venue may expose an audience to, or a limited one.
And a social cost to protection that does not exist at work, which is the practical obstacle rather than the informational one.
The arithmetic worth knowing
An evening at 100 dBA: fifteen minutes is the daily allowance.
A club at 105: roughly five minutes.
Which means a single night out can exceed a working week's occupational allowance, and this is not a rhetorical comparison — it is the same calculation with the same exchange rate.
The recovery period matters. A day of quiet after is the practical mitigation available to somebody who is going anyway.
Headphones
The exposure is the level at the ear, which is not the volume setting.
Isolation changes everything. Poor isolation means the listener raises the level to overcome background noise — so a noisy commute produces higher listening levels than a quiet room, and better isolation lowers exposure by removing the reason to turn it up.
Duration is the other half. A moderate level for eight hours is a substantial dose, and headphone listening is unusually long compared with most exposures.
Some devices report cumulative exposure, which is the most useful feature in this category and is worth switching on.
What actually helps
Distance from the source at a venue, and away from speakers rather than in front of them.
Musician's or level-dependent protectors, which attenuate more evenly and preserve the music rather than muffling it — the same reason intelligibility matters at work.
Breaks, which reduce the total directly.
And a quiet day afterwards, which is the only remedy available once the exposure has happened.
