The Room You Work In

A workplace has somebody responsible for its acoustics, however imperfectly. A spare room does not, and the result is frequently worse in the ways that matter for concentration.

What is usually wrong

Reverberation. A room with hard floors, bare walls and a large window sustains sound, which makes every noise last longer and makes voices on calls harder to understand.

External noise with no mitigation. Traffic, neighbours, construction, with domestic glazing and no assessment.

Intermittent domestic sound, which is more disruptive than steady sound at the same level because attention re-orients to change.

And no ability to move. In an office the answer to a noisy area is another area; at home there frequently is not one.

What none of it is

A hearing risk. Domestic levels are far below anything that damages, and framing home working as a hearing question misdirects the effort.

The problem is concentration and call intelligibility, which are real and are a different category.

What actually changes it

Soft surfaces. A rug, curtains, a bookshelf with books in it. Reverberation falls quickly with a modest amount of absorption, and this is the cheapest intervention with the largest effect on how a room sounds.

Position. Away from the shared wall, away from the window on the road side, facing into the room rather than into a corner.

Sealing rather than glazing, as the first step on external noise — gaps pass sound out of proportion to their area.

And a door that closes, which is worth more than most acoustic products and is frequently the actual difference between a room and a corner.

The call quality point

Reverberation is the main reason a home office sounds bad to other people.

A microphone picks up the reflected sound as well as the direct, and a reverberant room makes speech less intelligible at the far end regardless of microphone quality.

Which means absorption improves calls more than a better microphone does, and it is usually cheaper.

Closer microphone placement also helps, by raising the direct sound relative to the reflected — the same principle as distance from a source, applied in reverse.

Measuring it

A level reading will tell you the room is quiet, which you knew.

The useful measurements are reverberation and speech intelligibility, which need a test signal and software rather than a meter.
